1. **Prepare the Pastry:**
– Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
– Place the puff pastry sheets on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
– Prick the pastry sheets all over with a fork to prevent them from puffing too much.
– Bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden and crispy.
– Allow to cool completely, then trim to fit the size of your baking dish.
2. **Prepare the Custard:**
– In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, and half of the sugar. Heat over medium heat until it starts to steam.
– In a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Add the egg yolks and mix until smooth.
– Gradually pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to avoid curdling.
– Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and starts to bubble.
– Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract.
– Allow the custard to cool slightly, then cover with plastic wrap touching the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate until completely cool.
3. **Assemble the Slices:**
– Place one sheet of puff pastry in the bottom of your baking dish.
– Spread the cooled custard evenly over the pastry.
– Top with the second sheet of puff pastry.
– Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until set.
4. **Serve:**
– Dust the top with powdered sugar before serving.
– Cut into squares or slices and enjoy!
Feel free to customize the filling with different flavors or toppings according to your preference. Enjoy your delicious custard slices!
