Ingredients

For the Crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups (190 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • A pinch of salt

For the Apple Filling:

  • 4-5 medium apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or almonds work well)

For the Meringue Topping:

  • 3 large egg whites
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Crust

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add the egg and mix until the dough comes together. If it’s too dry, add a teaspoon of water at a time.
  4. Press the dough evenly into the bottom of a lined square or rectangular baking dish.
  5. Bake for about 10-12 minutes until it begins to set but isn’t fully baked. Remove from the oven and set aside.

  1. Spread the meringue evenly over the apple and nut layer.
