There’s something timeless about a warm apple strudel fresh from the oven. With its flaky golden crust, tender cinnamon-spiced apples, and sweet glaze drizzled over the top, this dessert feels both comforting and elegant. This easy homemade version uses puff pastry, making it perfect for American home bakers who want a bakery-style treat without the extra work.
Ingredients
For the Apple Strudel
- 1/2 cup golden raisins
- 2 tablespoons rum
- 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 package (2 sheets) frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
For the Cinnamon Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
- In a small bowl, combine the golden raisins and rum. Place the bowl in a sink or larger bowl with a few inches of hot water and let the raisins soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Drain any excess liquid.
- In a large mixing bowl, toss the diced apples with lemon juice. Add the soaked raisins, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir until the filling is evenly mixed.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line two baking sheets or prepare two large pieces of parchment paper.
- Gently unfold the puff pastry sheets onto the parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to lightly smooth out the seams and creases.
- Sprinkle 1/4 cup of panko breadcrumbs down the center of each pastry sheet. Divide the apple mixture evenly and spoon it over the breadcrumbs.
- Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut strips along both sides of each pastry sheet, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide, making sure the strips line up evenly.
- Transfer the parchment paper with the assembled pastries onto baking sheets.
- Fold the pastry strips over the filling, alternating from side to side to create a braided look. Lightly dampen the ends with water to help seal the pastry.
- Use paper towels to gently blot any extra juice around the pastry to prevent sogginess.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Brush the egg wash over the top and sides of each strudel.
- Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the strudels are puffed and deeply golden brown.
- While the strudels cool, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth.
- Once the strudels are fully cooled, drizzle the cinnamon glaze over the top before slicing and serving.
