Fried Apple Turnovers

Ingredients:

For the Apple Filling:

  • 3 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • 2-3 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup milk (or enough to make a soft dough)

For Frying and Coating:

  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling:
    • In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
    • Cook until the apples soften and release their juices, about 5-7 minutes.
    • If you want the filling thicker, mix the cornstarch with a small amount of water, then add it to the skillet. Stir until the mixture thickens slightly. Set aside to cool.
  2. Make the Dough:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
    • Add the softened butter and mix until crumbly.
    • Gradually add the milk, mixing until you get a soft dough. Knead lightly until smooth, but do not overwork.
  3. Assemble the Turnovers:
    • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
    • Cut out circles using a cookie cutter or a glass.
    • Place a spoonful of the apple filling onto one half of each circle, then fold the other half over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges with a fork to seal.
  4. Fry the Turnovers:
    • Heat the oil in a deep skillet over medium heat.
    • Fry the turnovers in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
    • Remove and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  5. Coat with Sugar:
    • While the turnovers are still warm, mix sugar and cinnamon (if using) in a bowl and roll each turnover in the sugar mixture to coat.
  6. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Serve warm for the best taste, though they can also be enjoyed at room temperature.

These fried apple turnovers are a wonderful treat with a crisp outside and a warm, spiced apple filling inside. Perfect for autumn or any time you crave something sweet and comforting!
