Fried Apple Turnovers
Ingredients:
For the Apple Filling:
- 3 medium apples, peeled and diced
- 2-3 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
For the Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- A pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup milk (or enough to make a soft dough)
For Frying and Coating:
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Apple Filling:
- In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
- Cook until the apples soften and release their juices, about 5-7 minutes.
- If you want the filling thicker, mix the cornstarch with a small amount of water, then add it to the skillet. Stir until the mixture thickens slightly. Set aside to cool.
- Make the Dough:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the softened butter and mix until crumbly.
- Gradually add the milk, mixing until you get a soft dough. Knead lightly until smooth, but do not overwork.
- Assemble the Turnovers:
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.
- Cut out circles using a cookie cutter or a glass.
- Place a spoonful of the apple filling onto one half of each circle, then fold the other half over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges with a fork to seal.
- Fry the Turnovers:
- Heat the oil in a deep skillet over medium heat.
- Fry the turnovers in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Remove and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Coat with Sugar:
- While the turnovers are still warm, mix sugar and cinnamon (if using) in a bowl and roll each turnover in the sugar mixture to coat.
- Serve and Enjoy:
- Serve warm for the best taste, though they can also be enjoyed at room temperature.
