Ingredients:

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

For the Ground Beef Layer:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
    • Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain the potatoes and mash them with butter, milk, salt, and black pepper until smooth and creamy.
    • Stir in chopped parsley, if desired, and set aside.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef:
    • In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
    • Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until softened.
    • Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, thyme, and oregano, and stir in the tomato sauce. Simmer for a few minutes, then remove from heat.
  3. Assemble the Casserole:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • In a baking dish, spread the mashed potatoes evenly as the base layer.
    • Top with the cooked ground beef mixture, spreading it evenly over the potatoes.
  4. Add the Cheese Topping:
    • Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top of the casserole.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
  6. Serve:
    • Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!
